Mourning the death from consumption of her young sister, Fanny, Lady Jean Conway goes home to the Brecon dower house to be comforted by her former governess, Miss Bluestone. Rescued from a flood by Lord Clanross’s Scots steward James Sholto, Jean finds herself being courted by Hugh Fremont, a neighbour and a true Corinthian. Hugh shares her tastes and interests, he is both wealthy and handsome, and he wants to marry her. Before she can say yea or nay, though, Jean has to learn to trust her own heart.

The Young Pretender The Conway Series Book 4 edition by Sheila Simonson Literature Fiction eBooks

If you are new to the books of Sheila Simonsson, I would like to point out that this is the fourth book in a series, and to enjoy it to the fullest, you should read Bar Sinister, Lady Elisabeth's Comet, and Love and Folly first. If you enjoy Regencies, and haven't read these yet, believe me. You will enjoy them.
The Young Pretender takes up the story of Jean Conway years after the end of Love and Folly. She has retreated to the dower house at Brecon to recover from the death of her younger sister, Fanny. Coming home unannounced, she finds the house deserted and is rescued from a flood by her brother-in-law's steward, Sandy Sholto, who in the rush of the rescue suffers a broken collar bone. Miss Bluestone, her beloved governess, shows up and things get complicated, which is normal for a Simonsson novel. I read this book overnight, enjoyed it greatly, then went back and reread it the next day. There are so many things to enjoy in this book, and I expect I will reread it again, as I have done all her books. I suggest that you consider these books as a four volume work, and keep all four books together, for ease in rereading in the future. Enjoy them all.

The Young Pretender The Conway Series Book 4 edition by Sheila Simonson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I am so pleased to Ms. Simonson decided to publish this continuation of the Conway story. Her feel for the period and her characters have always made her regencies keepers for me. If she has more, I urge her to get them published.
Too short, but ties up a few loose ends from the previous books in the series. A must read for lovers of Bar Sinister, Lady Elizabeth's Comet and Love & Folly.
I have read all of Ms. Simonson's books. I love her Regencies. They are humorous the characters are realistic and for the most part likeable. I always felt cheated because I couldn't find the last book in the Conway series. I was so excited to find it in the store that I purchased it right away and couldnt wait to read it.

I was somewhat disappointed. I felt she did not give this story its due. It was too short and the ending was very abrupt. I have come to expect more from this author.
I love most of Shelia Simonson's books. The better ones (Lady Elizabeths Comet is my favorite) are intelligent, funny and romantic. The Young Pretender is a straightforward account of a set of events, and feels like it's missing a last chapter. There is almost no romance, the hero and heroine barely interact, and if you hadn't read the previous books, you probably wouldn't understand Lady Jeans character at all. We understand that the hero loves her, because he says so, but because he doesn't feel their stations are equal he never shows anything.
I have read all four books of the series and enjoyed all four immensely. Sheila Simonson takes the regency novel to a much higher plane than most other writers. Lots of information about social and political situation of the moment and it's interesting. So are main characters. This is not a bodice ripper which I found refreshing, but a thought provoking romance.
It's lovely to find these Sheila Simonson books republished as e-books. This one was especially enjoyable. I loved it and can highly recommend to you. These are not wallpaper regencies, YAY! The interaction, character development, and slow growing relationship between the h/h are superb. Unfortunately, this calibre of book is all too hard to find lately. I'm very happy that these were republished.
This is the only one of this author's books that I'm convinced must have been written as an after-thought. It was somewhat plodding and it ended so abruptly and so badly that I thought I must have missed several pages. In fact, I read through the ending twice since I could not believe that was it!
I've really enjoyed her other books which was why this was such a disappointment. Wish it had been at my library so that I did not need to purchase it to finish the series!
