While this is not a bedtime story for children, it should be noted that books written for children in the 1800's included some realities of life that were not uncommon. Drowning cats are disturbing, but also is the story of "Beautiful Joe" an autobiography of a dog, written from his perspective in 1893. As a puppy, he was owned by a cruel man who cut off his ears and tail when he defended his mother. I read this story when I was very young and the story stuck with me forever, although it was written 75 years before. It made me realize that man's inhumanity to man and beast was universal and it was one of man's uglier traits. This book gained much positive attention when it was written.Also consider Louisa May Alcott wrote "Little Women" in 1880, and she tells of the death of the youngest sister, Beth. This is also a book written for the younger set.
"Letters From a Cat" contains a fairly interesting tale and is suitable for adults as well. It is what the title says, letters from a cat to its young owner while she is away from home. Charming, if you've a fancy for Victorian literature.

This is an adorable book about a cat who misses his owner. Although written in typical Victorian style, it had a certain sweetness and rang true from the point of view of the cat. Any kindergarten-aged child might enjoy this as a read-aloud novel. So would any cat lover!
The idea of a cat writing letters is whimsical.The idea of a cat writing letterst to its mistress is poingnant.The idea of introducing the cats drowning as a matter of fact is sick beyond belief.What exactly is wrong with you?
If this were written today, I'd be looking at what would be considered double entendres all over the first page. Given that it was copyrighted in 1879, the writer likely didn't intend them. It is both sweet and sad and hi-lites the difference in how some pets were viewed in prior eras and in present day.
This is a cute tale about a cat who writes letters to his child owner. It is written in the first person and speaks of cats feelings. The book is dated in the 1800 and I loved it. However on the ebook it doesn't show any of the pictures that were present in the actual book but I think you can visualize them without the actual drawings.
Being an avid animal lover and a cat owner at that, this was the main reason why I bought the book. I was disappointed however; because my expectations were not in keeping with why I bought the book. I thought it was going to be a letter from a cat to its owner. Kinda like the book DEWEY, which I loved. I felt this book was written more for young peple, or for parents who would read a chapter to their child at bedtime as a bedtime story. Yes, I did initially preview the book before I bought it, the way I do all my books but the preview just left me hanging wanting more. After it was on my reader I just could not get into it..... Maybe it wasa just me... Due to this fact, I could not honestly rate this book, because I have not honestly read it......
I think the paper version of this book has illustrations...when reading this on the , nothing of the artwork shows up except for captions and box lines where it seems a picture would go. The story itself I found to be depressing. Nobody seems to genuinely love the cat except for the little girl. When the girl goes on a trip with her father, the mother sends the girl letters she swears the cat wrote. The cat is taken care of in the girl's absence mainly because no one wants to see the girl upset when she comes back, but the poor animal keeps getting into situations that leave it bloodied, cut, nearly dead. Somehow the cat survives to see its later years and everyone (except the girl) seems to get gung ho about disposing of it. I would not recommend reading this to small children --- I think it'd be too much of a bummer for little ones.
If you skip the preface you might not be left with a hollow feeling in the pit of your stomach the whose time you read the story. Pretend you don't know anything horrible is going to happen to the cat and you might get to enjoy it. It's actually pretty charming, the personification of the cat and how her Victorian cat sensibilities are portrayed and the little girl's apparent belief that kitty really did learn how to write. You know the author is bitter, but kitty's letters don't reflect that. The illustrations are really nice as well. You're not going to get them in this edition, but try searching in a free book database, you can find a full version in pdf, which can also be transferred to , if you like.
